Facts & Figures on the DUET System in Uzbekistan

What started as a pilot project of the National Bank of Uzbekistan in 1995 with 5000 cards evolved to a national interbank payment system composed of 18 leading banks of Uzbekistan.

As of February 2008, 3 680 000 DUET smart cards, 17 800 POS terminals and 4300 ATMs are active in the system. The number of card transactions in 2007 increased by 140% compared to 2006. The share of NBU card payments in retail POS transactions rose to 61% compared to 39% cash payments. The transaction turnover in 2007 was 460 million USD which is a 210% increase compared to 2006. According to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers (period: 2007-2010) which aims to stimulate the expansion of the national payment system, the yearly increase in card turnover and transactions shall be 30% until 2010. The resolution also set the milestone of a total of 5 million cards and 30 000 POS to be installed in Uzbekistan by 2010.
